One day the human Aki was sailing his boat. His sister was playing by the mass. Soon she fell off and panicked for she could not swim. Upset by this Aki went to throw out his net only to find it trapped the girl and she drowned. Devastated the boy prayed to Koga to bring his sister back to life. Koga sent a thunderstorm and the boy knew in his heart that his sister was gone. One day and old woman passed by his house. She was hungry and a beggar so the boy Aki welcomed her into his home. Inside she noticed that Aki had a passion for drawing illustrations. There were portraits of his sister hanging among the house. Curious the old women asked why. The boy responded that sometimes it makes it feel as if she was there. The women asked if he could make her a drawing. A drawing of his favorite goddess.
The boy responded yes, wanting to please his guest. He soon collected his favorite pencils and began illustrating. Pleased with his work he handed the drawing to the old woman. The old woman looked at the drawing and was happy. She asked who the goddess was. To which the boy responded “Bia”. The old woman laughed. Then she took off her cloak to reveal that it was in fact Bia of the illustration in disguise. Stunned the boy asked why she had visited him. To which she responded that she felt pity on him for the loss of his sister. She promised the boy one favor. To which he asked for his sister’s return. Bia Said she couldn't do that for him. But instead she could grant him passage into the underworld and he could reason with Koga there. She warned him to be very careful for the god was easily angered. Pleased she led him to the entrance. The trees of the secret passage bowed and they entered into the land. Do to it being summer the land was covered in fog and mist. Soon mist filled his eyes and he was blinded while inside.
Unable to see he went up to the god begging for his sister’s return. He then reached into a bag and pulled out a drawing of the god in hopes for payment. Pleased with his art the god allowed him to take his sister but if he looked back at her she would be trapped in the underworld. Aki agreed and began walking for what seemed to be days home. One day he was feeling thirsty so he took a seat by one of the rivers in Jikau. He soon lost direction due to the nature of the water and the blinding mist of memories facing Jikau so he turned around looking for area. His vision in a flash cleared and he saw before him his sister covered in grueling worms, decaying skin and lastly she had swollen red eyes. Panicked he ran away out of the underworld while his sister cried at the betrayal.
A few days later Bia visited him disappointed. So he asked if there was anything she could do. She looked around at the paintings of his sister. She asked for his markers. She then enchanted them so that whenever a drawing was made with the likeness of a person, after they die, they may see the world through the image. This worked for laws of Jikau but that is a tale for another day. Thankful he gave the goddess one last drawing before she departed. This is why photo and illustrations of deceased beloved family members are to be held up in Genwa households.
